WIP: Chris Bachalo’s AOA Silver Samurai

Wednesday, March 30th, 2011

A few posts ago, I wrote about creating paper toys based on some of the characters from Marvel Comic’s ” Age of Apocalypse ” series.  You can read about it here.   To be specific, I wanted to make paper toys of selected AOA characters drawn by one of my favorite comic book artists, Chris Bachalo.

AOA Silver Samurai is one such character. I actually don’t like the ” comic character ” per se, what I do like is Bachalo’s rendition of him.

See? Pure " gorgeousness ", don't you think?

If you want to see more of Bachalo’s gorgeous artwork, go get yourself a copy of the book – especially the 10th year anniversary mini series.

AOA Silver Samurai, coming soon.

Anyway, I’m just about done with AOA Silver Samurai.  The toy will be out soon enough, I just need to make some minor adjustments on the template.  Check back soon.

That’s all for now, cheers!

Sucker Punch Paper Toy – Baby Doll

Friday, March 25th, 2011

So… have you seen the movie yet?   I’ll try to watch it over the weekend.  I really do hope the story is good.  The visuals are definitely great.

Baby Doll is now available for download.  Note that I did some modifications to the ” Contender ” template.  This version has bangs, pigtails, and a smaller base ( supposedly to help simulate the short skirt ).

Bangs, pigtails, sword, guns,... Check!

I suggest to follow the glue order found in the template.  It will really help you put Baby Doll together.  You will need to add a step #Zero however, which is to glue something ” heavy ” ( like a coin ) at the back ( unprinted side ) of the area marked with a red circle (see image below).  Do that after pre-folding.  This is because if you dont, the toy will tip over due to the smaller base – I found that out the hard way.

One ring to make her stable

Coin sold separately. One is enough.

Note that you’ll need to snip off a part of the leg ( rear side ) to help make Baby Doll stand up.  The snips are a quick way to fix the issue – you’ll know what I mean when you’ve glued all the tabs.

A blond chick in a Japanese school girl outfit. Cool.

You can download the template here. Subscribe to this blog to receive the password in the mail and gain access to the downloads section.  Registration is free, just enter your email address in the subscribe field at the right-hand side of the page header.

That’s all for now.  Enjoy the movie!

WIP: SuckerPunch Paper Toy – Baby Doll and then some…

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

I almost forgot about this movie – I just realized it’s going to be released soon.   So I thought:  Perfect excuse to make a Japanese Shool Girl Outfit paper toy!  LOL.  Seriously, I think it’s time I designed a female paper toy.  It’s only proper to be fair, right?  Equality and all that.

Quick info: The film is directed by Zack Snyder, the same guy who did 300 and Watchmen.  From the trailer, it looks like a cool movie, why?  Well, I think it’s got plenty of:

  • Pretty anime-ish action sequences ( that sequence with the giant Samurai is just awesome )
  • Pretty chicks ( the movie’s got plenty)
  • Pretty graphics ( Snyder’s trademark, natch! )
  • Pretty Jin-Roh-esque baddies ( Don’t know what I’m talking about?  Google it )
  • Pretty Airships, Biplanes, Steam Punk-ish vehicles
  • Pretty Post Apocalyptic feel ( WOW! Steam Punk and Post A! In one movie!?! )
  • That big mech of theirs is not so pretty ( my view ), but I like mechs so I’ll add it to this list anyway
  • Story?  We’ll see.  I do hope it delivers – something ” trippy ” I hope.

Back to the toy, this is what I have so far. I’ll be prototyping in the next few days.  This template will have new features not available in the usual contender template.  Watch out for it.

Nope, this is not my attempt to make a Britney Spears paper toy!

Now before you close this page and move on to a different website, I want you to check a couple of videos.  Don’t worry, they’re cool.  You’ll probably share it on Facebook or something, if you haven’t already.

First, watch the official SuckerPunch trailer here.

Next go check out this cool mashup by forensicator8.

Enjoy!

Paper Toy Blanks: Contender, Hood and Brute, Basic

Monday, March 21st, 2011

Hello everyone!  Just letting you know that the blanks for ” Contender, Hood ” ( used for Ezio ) and ” Brute, Basic ” ( for Bane ) is now available in the downloads section.

Contender, Hood

Brute, Basic

Note that I edited the title block a bit – to provide enough space to place the ” customizer’s ” logo on the template.  I think it’s only fitting.  Give credit where credit is due, right?

So far, we have:

  • Rondo, Basic
  • Contender, Basic ( uploaded )
  • Contender, Ears ( the one used for Wolverine, Heihachi, etc… )
  • Contender, Hood ( uploaded )
  • Contender, Accessories 1
  • Contender, Accessories 2
  • Contender, ( coming soon )
  • The Brute ( uploaded )
  • Tough Guy ( coming soon )
  • Muscular ( coming soon )
  • Agent Nix ( coming soon )
  • Steam Punk Series ( coming soon )

As mentioned, I’ll be releasing more blanks in the near future as well as new templates – plenty in the works 😉 .  I am currently looking for artists to collaborate with – I’ll design the template, the artist creates the fabulous art.  Expect an “official” post on that sometime soon for more details.  But if you’re interested to discuss options sooner or if you have any questions or custom requests for the current templates ( or maybe a sneak peak at what’s coming soon ), just send me a message through the contact form of this blog.

Just like last time, the templates are free to use.  My only request is to be given due credit and a link to this site.   Please do send me images of your customs and your template ( message me first through the contact form ) as well as your site addresses and download links so I can make a post about it.

I look forward to seeing all the awesome customs!

As always, you can download the template here.  Subscribe to this blog to receive the password in the mail and gain access to the downloa

ds section.  Registration is free, just enter your email address in the subscribe field at the right-hand side of the page header.

That’s all for now.  Cheers!

WIP: The New Age of Apocalypse ( AOA ) Paper Toys

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

Just before we release the Avengers – related movie paper toys, let’s do this batch first.

For all you young ‘uns in the audience, ” Age of Apocalypse ” was one of the biggest crossovers in Mavel’s comic book universe.  The series gives you a glimpse of what would happen if Professor X died and Apocalypse ruled the world.

For me, I got a kick out of seeing how the different X teams turned out in the story.  Also, being a very visual person, I especially liked the costume make overs of a number of characters.

10 years later, Marvel came out with a limited series ” The New of Age of Apocalypse “.  It was sort of an update on what’s happened to the characters years after the big crossover.  This one I especially liked because it was penciled by Chris Bachalo, one of my favorite comic book artists ever.  I honestly buy comic books ( sometimes ) by this guy just because he penciled them – him and Joe Madureira.  😉

For a brief summary on what happened in the limited series, go here.  If you want to read the book and check out the GORGEOUS artwork, I suggest you get yourself a copy.  To make things easier, I’ve added a link to Amazon, just click on the image to bring you to the page.

Get yourself a copy now!

So anyway, if any of you have been keeping tabs on my to do list, I’ve decided to create paper toys based on selected characters from the series.  Note that I am still undecided on which ones to do exactly – what I’m looking for are characters that look cool ( thanks to Bachalo ) and the ones that have accessories – because paper toys with accessories are much more fun to do.

I’m definitely going to make Silver Samurai and MAYBE Wolverine ( My issue with Logan is that I already did a Wolverine paper toy before – so it’s kinda redundant for me )  Sunfire is really cool, but he doesn’t have any props.  Angel would be great, but I always thought he was a bit lame ( I am doing an Arcangel sometime in the future, THAT would be cool, watch out for that ).

If you have any suggestions and preferences, just post them in the comments section.

That’s it for now, cheers!
