Quick update: Papermon, Facebook, Client work!

Hi All,

Just a quick update.  It looks like we’re borrowing some game play mechanics from the Papermon game I’m creating for a Facebook game application that we’re developing at work. Watch out for both Papermon and the Facebook app soon.

Also, for everyone out there with a Facebook account – I’d appreciate it a lot if you can check out a game for me, (http://apps.facebook.com/skirmishmissions/). Please do share with me your thoughts on what you think works or what doesn’t work for the game. Please do share with me your ideas on what you think will make it better.  Tell your friends and family about it, we’re very open to suggestions.

Lastly, I’ve been busy working on my first Papertoy-related commission – one of the reasons why I haven’t been posting. The paper toy is part of a promotional campaign that is going to launch soon. I cant tell you a lot about it just yet, but as soon as I can, I will.

Cheers for now!

    What Works
    1: Tutorial with animation

2: Graphics are consistent and creates an appropriate atmosphere.

    What Doesnt Work
    1:
Here’s a short list of the flow:
    1: Buy units
2: Wait for units to be created
3: Accept Mission & Play mission

I think that 2 is an unnecessary step.. if there’s any hidden reason for there to have a build-timer, then I (a first time player) don’t know what it is.

2: Getting into combat + Screensize
It took me about a minute of being clueless to find out about the missions. Here’s roughly what went down..

1: 10 seconds watching the tutorial
2: 30(?) seconds waiting for infantry to be made
3: 10 seconds wondering where all the enemies were
(Because it was being made, I thought I would already be fighting. It should be clearer that there is a DISTINCT preparation phase, and combat phase)
4: Accidentally sold an infantry unit, in search of activating my units
5: 10seconds. Found Missions screen.. selected Biohazard. Expected the game to start.
Recommended.. if players select a mission, the game should assume they want to play that mission now. Pressing ‘Start Mission’ seems to be an unnecessary step
6: After 15 seconds, realized the game screen was too big, and had to scroll down.
7: Failed my mission. I liked how there was mortar and sniper on the enemies, but didn’t like how I failed because they were powerful.. if they can take out my wimpy guys, shouldn’t I have access to them too? Was sad because I lost my jeep..

4: When you make a unit, it puts it into you row2. Why would you ever put it in Row1?

Overall, I can see this game being played on facebook. However, personally, I wouldn’t play it because I didn’t see any immediate depth to what I could do.
I can make infantry. OK, my only strategy is to make alot of infantry. Can’t fail right?
    Well, I did 😛

    Hey Dennis,

Thanks for checking out the game. I really appreciate it.
    Especially your detailed feedback.

I’ll share it with the team and see how we can best improve it.
We’re also developing a couple more independent games, if you’re interested, once they are ready, I can send you links for you to check out.
External feedback is always good. Let me know.

Open invitation to all of you out there, in case you’re interested.
Just send me a note through the contact module on the blog.

    Cheers!

    Hi Monte Carlo,

Thanks for taking the time to review the game. Very much appreciated.
We understand that there a lot of things we need to adjust in the game.
We are currently incorporating enhancements to address problems pointed out by friends who tested the game.
Your input will be added to the whole comment list and reviewed by the designer and devs.

    Thanks again.

    James
